H1N1

The world was shocked by the spreading of an endemic or some called it as flu pandemic- H1N1. Until now, the cases of H1N1 are increasing. A lots of country having the same situation. People get scared with the phenomenon occur. As the result, precautious steps are being taken immediately. Most of the airport are guarded carefully- having straining process. People are advised to keep the cleanliness by washing their hands after come back from outside to avoid being infected.

Influenza A(H1N1) virus is a subtype of influenzavirus A and the most common cause of influenza (flu) in humans. Some strains of H1N1 are endemic in humans and cause a small fraction of all influenza-like illness and a large fraction of all seasonal influenza. H1N1 strains caused roughly half of all human flu infections in 2006. Other strains of H1N1 are endemic in pigs (swine influenza) and in birds (avian influenza).

In June 2009, World Health Organization declared that flu due to a new strain of swine-origin H1N1 was responsible for the 2009 flu pandemic. This strain is commonly called "swine flu" by the public media.

The symptoms of H1N1 (swine) flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with H1N1 (swine) flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with H1N1 (swine) flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, H1N1 (swine) flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions. (source: http://www.pandemicflu.gov/faq/swineflu/04.html )

In order to avoid this scary disease, all people have to be aware and obey the advice given by government or other medical institute such as to report any case of H1N1 symptoms and if possible, avoid visiting the high risk country such as America and Mexico.

UPSI Vice Chancellor’s action in posting a memo related to H1N1- (about the precautious should be taken), is a way of concern for the UPSI citizen. In order to avoid any unwanted things happened, UPSI then take a drastic decision- UPSI is closed due to the H1N1! This action is taken after some students are reported that they are being infected.

What we can do now is try our best to follow the precautious steps. Of course we don’t want to be infected. At the same time, we should pray to GOD to give us a good health. Some people say that a disease is the consequences of what we had done in our life. So, we must be strong. Hopefully we will manage to face it.
